The Greene County Safe & Secure Foundation Fund was established in 2013 by Charles and Kelley Middleton and is an entity of The Community Foundation of Central Georgia.
Charles is a Vietnam veteran and owne of Acura & Volvo of Athens. He and his wife Kelley have lived in Greene County for the last 20 years. The inspiration for this Foundation began when Charles Middleton's father, Charles Griffin Middleton Sr., a Sheriff in Jackson County, NC, was killed in an ambush while serving a warrant on July 2, 1953. His mother Selma Middleton then served out his father's term in office as Sheriff. His mother urged him to always do what he could to support those men and women who put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect us.
In 2012 Charles's wife Kelley was involved in a high speed rear-end collision on Interstate 20. Having seen what an amazing job the Georgia State Patrol and subsequent Emergency Personnel performed on that day, Charles decided it was finally time to make something happen. He realized it was past time to honor and recognize those men and women who are always there when we need them, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
To kick-off the establishment of the Foundation Fund, an appreciation dinner was held at Greene County High School for members of these departments and their families on October 4th, 2013. The next day, a Safe & Secure Rally was also held at Greene County High School. This event was held so the public could meet the personnel of these departments and actually look at the emergency vehicles up close. Needless to say, the weekend was a huge success!
